Where to Find Tender Writing Help

Bid for Success are specialists at working with small businesses or SMEs, which by the EU definition is a company with fewer than 250 staff and a turnover of less than €50 million. We know, from talking to SMEs around the country, that starting to bid for public sector contracts can be intimidating with businesses looking for tender writing help.

We’ve developed a program to support SMEs into bidding, but there are other resources available to help you. We’ve put together links to some of the best resources available below.

SME Academy

If you haven’t already been through our SME Academy, then it’s a great starting point. In five daily emails we’ll take you through the basics of the bidding, including where to find tender opportunities and how to make great bid/no-bid decisions. Sign up for the SME Academy here.

SME Scholarship

As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility programme, we offer a new SME two days of free tender writing help each month. How you use the time is entirely up to you; if you’ve got a bid, we’re happy to help with that, but we’ve also supported small businesses to develop a bid strategy, improve their solution architecture of tweak their sales proposals.

APMP Training

tender writing helpThe Association of Proposal Management Professionals has a UK chapter that is there to support bid professionals from all industries. If you join as a member, you can access the ‘Body of Knowledge’ which is a peer-reviewed library for bidding best practice.

The APMP also offers a host of training opportunities throughout the year, both from the UK branch and those from other countries including conferences and expos to share best practice from around the world. While a lot of the information is targeted at professionals who work on bid teams for larger companies, the core principles still apply to smaller companies.

You can also access the three-tiered certification process if you want to prove your skills; that starts with foundation level certification which covers the basics of the bid process from start to finish.

Bidding Quarterly

This magazine is published by bid and tender recruitment specialists, Bid Solutions, on a quarterly basis. Some of biddings leading lights contribute articles to the magazine, so it’s a way to stay up to date with best practice and thought leaders in the field and use the latest techniques to improve your own practice.

Grammar and Spelling

Spellcheckers are great – up to a point; butt knot awl miss takes get quart. If you really want to improve the quality of your writing them looking at more advanced tools will help you a lot. Grammarly is the next step up from a spell checker and will support you with spelling and grammar when you’re working in web forms to complete your SQ form or tender.

If you want to take it to the next level, then copy and paste your text into the Hemingway App, named after the famously stripped-down author. This website will give you feedback on things like the use of passive voice, run-on sentences, and the number of adverbs that all help make your writing easier to understand.

Bid for Success SME Specific Bid Training

The vast majority of bid training out there is aimed at bid professionals, people who have one role in a larger company and that is to write bids. But we know that for SMEs, bid writing tends to be just part of someone’s role. It may be the MD who is doing it in the evenings and at weekends, or a business manager who has to slot it around many other things. In other words, the bid training out there (while excellent) just hasn’t been created with SMEs in mind.

That’s why we’ve put together a tender writing help program that starts with the SME Academy and then moves on to our free ‘Get Bid Ready in Five Days’ challenge – this runs every few months, so if you’d like to sign up for the next presentation you can do that here.

We also offer paid training. There’s our 10 week, ‘Bidding Basics for SMEs’ delivered in bite-sized chunks to fit around your other commitments, workshop-style training courses, webinars, and one to one mentoring.
